The short version
- A hybrid battery pack is built from blocks. When one block weakens, the whole pack has to work around it.
- On a healthy Toyota or Lexus pack, all block voltages sit within about 0.3V of each other. A gap approaching 1V or more under load points to weak modules.
- No warning light does not mean no problem. The imbalance can grow for months before the car shows a fault.
- Every JPI inspection on a hybrid includes a block-by-block check with a Launch X431 scan tool, at no extra cost.
Hybrids like the Camry, RAV4, Corolla, C-HR, Prius and Lexus range are some of the most popular used cars in Sydney, and most of them run happily for many years. But the hybrid battery is the single most expensive part a used-hybrid buyer is likely to face, and a test drive will not tell you its condition. The car drives normally right up until the battery ECU decides a block is too far out of line.
How a hybrid battery is built
Most Toyota and Lexus hybrids use a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery made of many small modules connected in series. The battery ECU monitors them in pairs called blocks, and it reads a separate voltage for each block. Some newer models use lithium-ion packs, which the ECU monitors in a similar way.
| Example models | Blocks the ECU reports |
|---|---|
| Prius (3rd gen), Lexus CT200h | 14 blocks (28 modules) |
| Prius c, Yaris Hybrid | 10 blocks (20 modules) |
| Camry, RAV4, Corolla, C-HR, other Lexus | Varies by model and battery type; the scan tool shows the exact count |
Because every block is in series, the pack is only as strong as its weakest block. When one block loses capacity, it drains faster under acceleration and fills faster when charging, so its voltage swings further than the others. That difference between blocks is exactly what we measure.
What the block voltage difference tells us
The key number is the spread: the highest block voltage minus the lowest. We look at it with the battery resting, while it is being drained and while it is being recharged, because a weak block often looks normal until the battery is put to work.
| Spread between highest and lowest block | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Within ~0.3V | Blocks are well balanced, typical of a healthy pack. |
| ~0.3V to 1V | Some imbalance. We look at which block is drifting and whether it gets worse under load or with temperature. |
| 1V or more | One or more weak modules is likely. Budget for a repair or reconditioning, or negotiate on price. |
| Code P0A80 stored | Toyota's battery ECU has already flagged the imbalance ("Replace Hybrid Battery Pack"). |
These are general guides for Toyota and Lexus NiMH packs, not factory pass/fail limits. We always read them together with temperature, state of charge and the vehicle's history.
How we check a hybrid battery during an inspection
Scan every module for codes
We connect a Launch X431 and read stored, pending and history codes from the hybrid control system and the battery ECU, not just the engine. A cleared code can leave traces in history or pending memory.
Read every block voltage
The X431's live data shows the voltage of each block side by side, along with the battery temperature sensors and the state of charge. We note the highest block, the lowest block and the spread.
Put the battery to work
We watch the same readings while the battery is drained under acceleration and recharged by the engine and regenerative braking. A weak block shows itself by dropping or climbing faster than the rest.
Check the battery cooling
Hybrid batteries are air-cooled through a vent, usually near the rear seat. A vent blocked by dust, pet hair or luggage makes the pack run hot, which speeds up wear. We check the vent and compare the temperature sensors.
Report it in plain English
Your report includes the block readings, the spread, any codes and what they mean, so you know before you pay whether the battery is healthy, needs watching or needs budget set aside.

Toyota hybrid battery health check records
According to Toyota Australia, new vehicles bought from 1 January 2019 have the hybrid battery covered for 5 years with unlimited kilometres, extendable up to 10 years with an annual battery health check and logbook servicing at Toyota. The warranty stays with the car, so a second owner gets the remaining time, but only if the checks have been kept up. Ask for the records and confirm eligibility with a Toyota dealer.
Full service history
Regular servicing matters on a hybrid as much as any car. Gaps in the history, or a long period of the car sitting unused, are worth asking about. A hybrid battery that has sat flat for months can be damaged.
A clean PPSR and odometer check
A PPSR check shows finance owing and write-off or stolen status. Our free odometer check compares the reading against auction and listing records. Both are included free in every JPI inspection.
Hybrid battery FAQs
Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the hybrid battery ECU and read the voltage of every battery block, the battery temperatures and any stored codes. Then watch those readings while the battery is resting, being drained under acceleration and being recharged. In a healthy pack the blocks stay close together; a weak block drops away from the others, especially under load. A dashboard check or a test drive alone will not show this.
On a healthy Toyota or Lexus nickel-metal hydride pack, the highest and lowest block voltages are typically within about 0.3V of each other. A gap that grows towards 1V or more under load usually means one or more weak modules. Toyota's battery ECU stores code P0A80 once the imbalance becomes large enough.
Yes. If the car is a hybrid, the block-by-block battery check with our Launch X431 scan tool is part of the standard Complete Vehicle Inspection at no extra cost, and the readings are included in your report.
Toyota Australia says its warranty stays with the car, so a new owner gets whatever time is left. For new vehicles bought from 1 January 2019, the traction battery is covered for 5 years with unlimited kilometres, extendable up to 10 years if the car has had an annual hybrid battery health check and logbook servicing at Toyota. Ask the seller for those records, and confirm eligibility with a Toyota dealer.
No. A block voltage check shows whether the pack is balanced and whether any block is already weak, which is the most common way these batteries fail. It cannot predict an exact remaining lifespan. A full capacity test needs the battery charged and discharged on workshop equipment over several hours.
Buying a used hybrid?
We come to the car anywhere in Sydney and run a 200+ point inspection. On a hybrid, that includes a block-by-block battery check with a Launch X431, plus a FREE PPSR and odometer check. Your report is emailed about 30 minutes after we finish.
